Nautilus
Originally commissioned in 2009 by Decatur High School (Texas) and Rancho Cucamonga High School (California)
Nautilus begins with ominous chimes and wind noises before a strong full ensemble presence sets off a
regal tone. Once the initial waves have passed, the front ensemble re-enters and provides background support
to a woodwind build which leads into a another full ensemble impact. The tempo then slows and gives the
woodwinds another chance to calm the waters before low brass fill the air and give way to a trumpet fanfare.
The melody picks up and leads to a more frantic feel as woodwinds trills and dissonant chords come into play.
A front ensemble interjection changes the direction of the show and brings in more layering until a
bosun whistle sounds for the end of the movement.
A strong percussion feature opens up the next half of the show which transitions into a flowing wind rendition
of the Naval Hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong To Saveâ€. This section of the show softens the feel and gives a sense
of the calm after (and before?) the storm. The adrenaline then picks up and layers woodwind runs on top
of the main theme which is passed from brass to lower woodwinds. The battery returns as a background
and surges the ensemble build into a strong conclusion.
